Julia Fiona Roberts' parents are Walter Grady Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus. Her family is the fourth Roberts family that lived in Atlanta. This began with her great grandfather John Pendleton Roberts who was an agriculturalist. At an early age, her father became interested in theater. While a student at Emory University he appeared in diverse productions, both in and outside of the campus. He joined the Air Force in 1953. While working in Biloxi Mississippi was cast in an army production that featured Betty Lou Bredemus who was also in the Air force. The couple got married in the year 1955. Their son, Eric Anthony, was born in 1956. Walter as well as his spouse quit their Air Force service in, when they enrolled Walter as a student at Tulane University. Walter was employed as a technician by Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio to assist on the stage of the show Bum Bum and His Buddies in Decatur Georgia. Walter and Betty Lou started production in 1964 on the children's local Saturday morning television program Bum Bum and His Buddies, which they funded themselves. In 1964, Walter and Betty Lou founded The Actors and Writers Workshop. The workshop lasted six years. They had two more children: Lelisa Billingsley (1965) (also called Lisa), and Julia Billingsley (1967) (also known by the name Julie).
